The Rise Of The Web Directory

Lee July 6th, 2007

Why are there so many web directories and what is the reason behind their popularity?

The reason for this is simple - it’s a very easy way to gain links. Millions of webmasters and site owners are trying to build links for their web sites every day, and web directories are offering them the perfect solution. Many believe that links have more value if they are placed on a web site page whose content is related to the web site or web page they link to.Web directories offer hundreds of categories that are related to a wide range of topics. Many directories also have a high Google Page Rank and a large number of webmasters are interested in increasing their own PR by listing their web sites in such directories.

Another motivating factor is that links in most web directories can be obtained quickly and easily, often in a matter of hours, especially in paid web directories.

If you then consider the fact that a web directory can be built and run by just one individual then it is easy to figure out why so many webmasters are launching directories every day.

Successful paid directories earn money and reciprocal link directories attract links.

Yahoo Directory

Lee July 3rd, 2007

Yahoo was created in April 1994 by two Ph.D. candidates in Electrical engineering named David Filo and Jerry Yang. Yahoo was started in February 1994 in Filo and Yang’s campus trailer at Stanford. Originally it was called “Jerry and David’s guide to the World Wide Web”, but after randomly scanning pages in a dictionary for a smarter sounding name, they came up with “Yahoo”. Yahoo is actually an acronym for “Yet another Hierarchical Officious Oracle”, meaning that Yahoo seeks to be a directory that serves as an oracle to the modern day surfer.

Jerry and David only developed the directory originally as a way to keep track of their personal favourite sites on the Internet at that time. Back in 1994 the only popular way to find sites was using a basic engine called AltaVista.

The Yahoo directory is one of the premier sites on the internet today. Gaining a listing for your site can be free if it is completely non-commercial. For most webmasters however, there is an annual fee of $299 US. ($600 for adult sites)

The original fee, non-refundable, is for a review of your site and a one year listing if successful. The paid option does come with a guarantee that your site will be listed in 7 working days.

Gaining a link from the Yahoo directory can definately be beneficial to your site. It is considered to be an authority site, which means a link here may be given more weight Continue Reading »

DMOZ - Is it still worth the submission time?

Lee June 30th, 2007

DMOZ is well known all over the internet as being the largest open source directory online, but is it really worth your time and effort to try to get your website listed in their directory?

You must remember when submitting your website to DMOZ that this directory is one of the human powered directories, which means that a person must go over your submission, your website, and determine if your website is worthy of being in the directory from their own point of view. All of the editors at DMOZ are volunteers just like you and I that have applied to become editors and reviewers in their own special field of interest.

It does not cost anything to have your site listed in DMOZ, so that is a plus, but they do have certain standards that they expect but once again the volunteers are just people and Continue Reading »
